Young Entrepreneurs Academy, brought to you by Morgan Stanley
This past week the students taking part in this inaugural class of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy had the opportunity to get to know some local Presidents and CEOs from local companies. What better way for budding entrepreneurs to spend their evening than on the deck of Dive and Surf, overlooking the Marina as the sunset, gleaning advice from some who were in their very seats years before them. On the panel were Adam Goldberg of Fresh Brothers, Mike Zislis of the Zislis Group, Russ Lesser of Body Glove, and James O’Callaghan from the Manhattan Beach Chamber. Initially the panel shared their biggest successes, challenges, and lessons learned through their careers. Many also went on to share experiences they had when they were the students’ ages and how that helped shape them and their operational styles. The evening was interesting as much for the people who took part as it was for the candor and openness with which they spoke. Not often does a new business owner have the opportunity to hear from a successful CEO on what made them the person they are today.
Over the course of the curriculum the students have had the opportunity to learn about business formation, proper business plans, accounting and all the fun which comes with building a new business. There is nowhere in a textbook or lesson plan the opportunity to pick the brains of successful business owners and operators. The students listened and took in what was being shared and then asked their own questions. The demeanor in which the young entrepreneurs questioned this illustrious panel speaks highly to the quality of work they will be able to deliver. It will be exciting to see where each of these new businesses can go and who will be the next big company to come out of the South Bay.
While there are many who have enabled this program to take off we would like to give a special thank you to Adam Goldberg for providing the students with a tremendous dinner during the event and Russ Lesser for inviting us all into the perfect setting for such an event. The Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce is grateful for the time each of the CEOs were able to spend with our budding entrepreneurs. We are positive this will be an experience they will not soon forget.
