One of the goals of any chamber of commerce is to ensure you have a voice with your local legislators. Over the past year the Manhattan Beach Chamber of commerce has taken on an even greater role in trying to make this happen. Influence in Sacramento and locally comes in many forms from showing up, to advocating, and to inviting political leaders to come and meet with the collective body.
In June of this year we spent a week up in Sacramento, alongside many of our South Bay partners, meeting with our local representatives. During this trip we spoke on many key factors affecting the local business community including the Los Angeles Air Force Base, minimum wage ordinances, and education. With a contingent of more than sixteen delegates we commanded a lot of attention and open discussion. Each of our local representatives came to us and listened to the needs of the business community as well as discussed how their agenda would work with this.
Last week on August 12th we brought both State Senator Ben Allen and State Assemblyman David Hadley together to meet with the business community. During the two hour lunch they spoke on key issues affecting the business community and fielded questions from the more than seventy attendees. It was refreshing to see government leaders openly address the state of business in California and changes which need to be made. The bipartisan approach to business was evident throughout the discussion and bolstered the audience’s expectations for change to occur.
In an effort to engage the entire member base we are bringing back the legislative action committee. This committee will focus on shaping the voice of the chamber and what areas we will advocate on behalf of. We are fortunate to be able to have both Charles Gale and Richard Montgomery co-chairing this committee. Both individuals bring a great deal of knowledge and influence in the local political arena. Please take the time when the committee begins to meet to have your voice assist in shaping the future of both Manhattan Beach and California.
While these are not the only efforts we are making in the political arena it is important to be aware of what the chamber is doing on your behalf. The Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to continually driving a strong local economy while providing the resources for an incomparable quality of life.
