New Manhattan Beach business provides in-home care to help protect seniors against the dangers of falls.
Falls are the leading cause of injuries for older Americans. Falls threaten seniors’ safety and independence, and generate enormous economic and personal costs.
According to the US Center for Disease Control & Prevention:
- One-third of Americans aged 65+ falls each year.
- Every 15 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall; every 29 minutes, an older adult dies following a fall.
- Falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of nonfatal trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults.
- Falls result in more than 2.3 million injuries treated in emergency departments annually, including over 650,000 hospitalizations and more than 20,000 deaths.
- The financial toll for older adult falls is expected to increase as the population ages and may reach $54.9 billion by 2020.
Falls with or without injury also carry a heavy quality of life impact. A growing number of older adults fear falling and, as a result, self-limit activities and social engagements. This can result in further physical decline, depression, social isolation, and feelings of helplessness. According to the Society of Certified Senior Advisors, our society is experiencing a rapid growth in the senior population – the oldest of the baby boomers, the 78 million people born between 1946 and 1964, reached age 65 in 2011. According to the Pew Research Center, 10,000 boomers now turn 65 every day. This is the biggest and quickest aging of America’s population in history. In addition, medical advances and improvement of health services and disease control, have allowed the population to live longer into their 80’s, 90’s and beyond.
“That’s where Always Best Care Senior Services comes in,” said Loli Ramezani, owner and president of the Always Best Care office in Manhattan Beach. “Given the choice, most of us want to stay in the comfort of our homes and live an independent life. However without additional help, this may not be a safe option for many, especially as we age. Always Best Care is able to provide that additional support for performing daily activities if one lives alone or their family or friends are not nearby or able to provide the necessary care.”
“We meet with the client and/or family members and perform a complete assessment,” she added, “determining risk factors and performing home safety inspection/fall assessment. We work within client’s budget and ultimately match the client with the most qualified caregiver while providing peace of mind for their family members. As part of our services we provide medication management, make certain dietary habits are followed, ensure follow-up doctor appointments are kept and arrange for transportation if needed.”
Loli has lived in Manhattan Beach with her husband and two daughters for over 20 years. She is a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), a docent at the Manhattan Beach Historical Society, and is on the Board of Directors for Leadership Manhattan Beach (LMB).
