Ryan J. Choura is a creative event visionary and founder of Choura Events, a South Bay based boutique event rental company known for design, style, innovative products and large-scale event builds.
After a 15-year career in venue management and marketing, with a focus on social events, galas and weddings, he purchased Anza Party Rentals as the foundation for his true passion to create better events. He wanted to streamline the process for clients by providing one point of contact – a dedicated event professional – to help execute events of any scale. Instead of juggling several inexperienced vendors, he set out to build the one-stop-shop for homeowners, corporate clients and event industry experts.
As a result, Choura Events has emerged as a top 5 tenting company in the Western United States and has been chosen to execute events including the Electric Daisy Carnival, The Taste in Beverly Hills, Weinstein Company’s Golden Globes After Party, Manhattan Wine Auction and a long list of non-profit galas, corporate gatherings and celebrations across California.
Among his numerous accolades spanning the last decade, Choura earned a nod in the Top 100 Fastest Growing Private Companies of 2013 list by the Los Angeles Business Journal, named a ’30 Up and Coming’ event expert to watch by Special Events Magazine and was profiled in the CEO Centerfold for OC Metro in 2010.
Today, Choura and his team are best known for their bold ideas, ability to build anything anywhere, new collections of event rental furniture, top of the line tenting and shaking up the event rental world whenever possible.
How long have you been doing business in Manhattan Beach?
What made you choose Manhattan Beach?
Manhattan Beach is such a good place to meet young, driven professionals that want to do something great with their life. I love the energy of the community, the restaurants, the family-focused mentality and the way we support schools and charities. It’s just a fantastic place to be.
How did you engage the community when you first started?
I looked for an opportunity to show off our work by partnering with a non-profit, Walk With Sally, that needed help and vision to create an event in the Southbay that people wanted to attend.
What would you recommend for prospective business owners?
Take a risk and show that what you offer is great. It’s a small but powerful community, and people will recommend your service only if they have a positive experience. I also find networking helps a ton in the Southbay.
What’s your take on the evolving chamber?
It’s a good question. I think chambers need to stand for quality. People are too busy to spend time engaging and developing relationships with people that won’t have a positive impact on their business. I think people need to elevate their game to get the most out of their membership. You can network with specific groups online but good business centers around the right people getting together – the Chamber facilitates that.
From your experience, how have you seen events shape the social landscape in Manhattan Beach? How have they evolved?
Events are crucial to Manhattan Beach. Not only do people use events to socialize and celebrate – their vital in raising awareness and money for great causes. People in Manhattan Beach like to be part of the scene and events provide that platform for businesses and individuals to interact on a deeper level.
What advise would you give someone looking to plan an event to engage with local community members and businesses?
Create something that you would want to attend. I don’t think people planning an event are honest enough with themselves on why someone would come to their event. People have so many options and creating something worth attending – worth investing time in – is not an easy task. I recommend first, really defining what it is you are trying to accomplish. Second, bring in a person who can help you achieve that goal and lastly, deliver an experience that is going to make someone tell others about where they went, share photos, stories and that great feeling with others. It’s the game changer.
